<previous At the time of the birth of Giotto in 1264, Simon de Montfort, led a revolt against the King of England Henry the III who occupied the South West of France called the Duchy of Gascony. Montford joined the English barons who sought government reform. Montfort captured and imprisoned Henry and his son Edward. He ruled over England as a military dictator. Even though he attempted government reform by creating two parliaments, his ultimate aim was to keep power in the hands of a few barons, whom he could control. Eventually Montfort was attacked by the royal army supporting Edward. Montfort was decapited in 1265 and Edward I became king. He is the grand-father of Edward the III who is the son of the sister of the king of France, Philip IV. Edward the III, will claim the french territory and start the Hundred years war.
