<previous The Kamakura period ended in 1333. This period that started in 1185 gave the title of "shogun" to military dictators. The shoguns ruled in the emperor's name but in fact with a large independence. The central autority faded and before the end of this period Japan withstood two Mongol invasions in 1274 and 1281. next>
