<previous Marsiglio de Padua, living in Paris, published a scathing indictment of the Papacy. He envisioned the ideal state as an institution created by the people as Aristotle had described it before. The Church was to be under the control of the temporal ruler. The book was dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria.
