<previous Robert the Wise of Naples ruled over the kingdom of Naples in 1309 until 1343 after his ancestors (Charles I of Anjou (1227-1285) and brother of Louis IX king of France) defeated the Hohenstaufen dynasty (Holy Roman Empire).
His kingdom was composed of southern Italy, Greece and the Balkans. His court was one of the most splendid in Europe, attracting distinguised noblemen and artists like Giotto [more]. The city had developed profitable commercial ties to Florence and Tuscany. During those thrieving years for the ruling class, this society had no middle class, only an aristocracy and a working class. Tension eventually built up and under the ruling of his daughter Joan I, the kingdom fell into economic ruin and a violent civil war started between Sicilian, Aragonese and Angevin claimants to the throne. next>
