<previous Christine de Pisan was born 27 years after Giotto's death. She is the first professional woman writer in Europe after being left widowed in 1390 with three small children, a niece and a mother to support. Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, commissioned her to write a biography of his dead brother, King Charles V. Besides this work she asserted that women were just as capable of moral worth and heroic conduct as men in her "Letter to the God of Love", "The Book of the City of Ladies" and "The treasury of the City of the Ladies".
