<previous In the final sequence describing events from Christ betrayal through the Pentecost, Giotto's expressive powers reached their peak. The use of landscape in the composition is not a mere backdrop but an echo to the grief and desolation of the scene.
In the Pieta, one of the last events illustrated in this chapel, the expression of the grieving angels and the presence of a leafless tree convey desolation and mourning. The perspective used for the body of the angels is very innovative and conveys a sense of desarray. The despair and grief of the angels is expressed here in a rich variety of gestures.
The scene is arranged in depth with the different protagonists seen from the back, the side or the front. St John is in the background with his arms outstretched while the two Marys are seen from behind in the foreground.
