More than a century after Giotto died, the Renaissance paid tribute to the man regarded as the grandfather of Italian Art in a commemorative medallion placed in the Cathedral of Florence, where Giotto was buried.
Although Giotto's chief forte was painting, he is shown here in the photo on the right fitting a tile chip into a small mosaic. This portrait of Giotto in the medallion was made by Benedetto da Maiano around 1490.
Giotto is to be remembered as the master of naturalism at a time when art was destined to be in the service of the church. He infused his art with a new humanity, placing his characters in a secular context, giving them humane expressions.
