<previous Nine years after St Francis died, a basilica was build and painted by some unknown artist before Cimabue and Giotto contributed to the successive decorations.
On the right is a picture of a detail of such early work. In this representation of St Francis Healing the Lame, the background consists of some flat representation of buildings and vaults.
The next picture is part of the vault painted by Giotto in the Assisi Chapel. In this picture Giotto introduces the sophistication of perspective in his frescoes. Here Giotto masters the art of fitting an architecture in a curved and triangular vault by skewing the perspective.
Over the years Giotto will demonstrate his mastery of a new pictorial space. The school of Cimabue will slowly fade to give rise to the influence of Giotto's craft.
