Frieze
Painter's Craft

<previous Around 1325, The Peruzzi banker commissionned a dedication to St John the Evangelist and St John the Baptist. In the fresco on the right, St John is seen on the island of Patmos with his visions outlined in the sky above him. The fresco is today in a bad condition.

In his portraits Giotto parts sharply with the past. He gave his figures depth, down to earth expression, placed them in relation to each other in a narrative way. His narrative technique is sober and to the point. The gesture and facial expression of the characters tell about the unfolding of the drama. Later in Padua and Florence, Giotto will use a more subdued chromatic light and transparency than the one in Assisi [more on Assisi]. The fresco in the picture on the right is from this later period and was executed for the Santa Croce church in Florence.
