Assisi, in the country of Umbria [See region] is the town where St Francis was born. St Francis saw god in everything including animals and other phenomena of nature. He devoted his life to poverty and preaching. After his death in 1226 a church was build and dedicated to him: the basilica of St Francis decorated with frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto.
The great florentine painter, Cimabue painted several frescoes in the different parts of the church: scenes of the Old and New Testament and the life of St Francis. Giotto Di Bondone executed all the frescoes on one vault, at the time of his apprenticeship with Cimabue.
